Vice Principal of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Kevaun Sears, passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer, with education officials extending their condolences and remembering her as a remarkable educator and administrator who made a lasting contribution to the sector.

The Ministry of Education, in a statement, said that Sears served with distinction for many years as a mentor whose influence shaped generations of teachers and students across Guyana.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag recalled Sears as her former Mathematics teacher at President’s College, whose guidance and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression. She noted that Sears is remembered with great respect and gratitude, as her guidance, care and quiet strength left a lasting impression on her and on countless students and educators whose lives she shaped over the years.

Parag extended condolences to Sears’ family, friends and colleagues, and to all who are mourning her loss, expressing hope that they will find comfort in the many lives she touched and the legacy of love, service and dedication she leaves behind.

Former Minister of Education Priya Manickchand described Sears and her colleagues as patriots who played a key role in reopening CPCE after its closure due to COVID-19 and in expanding the institution into a college that operated largely, though not exclusively, online.

“My heart breaks at the passing of our Kevaun Sears… Kevaun gave most of her adult years to education and this nation is richer for her dedication and service,” Manickchand expressed.

“Her service helped to allow our country to graduate the most teachers the country has ever seen and move us from around 68% of our teachers being trained in 2020 to 98% of our teachers being trained or in training by 2025. Deepest condolences to Kevaun’s mom, her brother, the CPCE family and the wider education community,” she added.
